Irving and La Playa Streets, San Francisco The streets and houses are sunbleached. Except for one on the corner, a bright green apple. Power lines almost disappear into the sky. Houses and cars go on forever into the horizon. You yearn to walk in the sand in your bare feet.

Ruby's

Ruby's stood at the corner of Judah and 48th streets, an oblong mix of greens, light and dark, bright and faded. It made all the neighboring houses insignificant. Obscure shapes lurked and disappeared in its shadows. A man studied his cell phone in its doorway. Above it, power lines criss-crossed the cloudless, plain blue sky. Below it, the streets were planes of washed-out gray, devoid of traffic.

990 Bay Street

The apartment building on 990 Bay Street commanded a corner of Bay and Polk streets in the Marina District, flanked on one side by a row of smaller houses arranged like soldiers in formation. A red callbox bobbed in the foreground. Next to the building and under a streetlight, a young woman studied her phone, waiting for the light to turn green.
